This review will contain mild spoilers.
The first word that springs to mind is strange. With dark undertones, an almost surreal plot, and deeply thought-provoking concepts, The Blessed is one of the most bizarre modern-day tales I have read this year. It is, apparently, a retelling of sorts based on the lives of Saint Agnes, Saint Cecilia and Saint Lucy. While I am not familiar with the lives of these martyrs beyond their names, it was interesting to see how Tonya Hurley weaved the ancient religious aspects into a contemporary setting.
Much of this book revolves around Sebastian, an enigmatic character that is equal parts intriguing and confusing. He believes he is a saint. While at Perpetual Help Hospital, he makes sure to distribute intricate bracelets to three girls: Agnes, Cecilia and Lucy. Through these bracelets, the three girls and Sebastian meet in an old church, The Church of Precious Blood. What’s strange about this book, and what really didn’t make any sense to me at all, is Sebastian role. It is suggested that he is mentally ill, but whether or not this is in fact true is never clarified. In turn, there is a lingering sense of uncertainty around the plot. It’s up to the reader to decide if Sebastian is who he claims to be, and if the girls are who he claims them to be, or if he is under the influence of his own unstable mind.
While I had a difficult time trying to discern the true nature of the story, I had an even greater issue with the three main characters. Lucy is a cardboard cut-out of a troubled it-girl, Agnes is an emotional romantic, and Cecilia is an up and coming local musician. All three have distinguishable traits, but it takes a while for the (very poor and inconsistent) third person narrative to let this become apparent. My main concern is that none of these girls are particularly likeable. While reading this book, I felt incredibly distanced from everyone and everything that was happening to them. I wouldn’t call the girls dull exactly, but I did feel they were a difficult group to appreciate. Violence in fiction very rarely makes me squirm, but the actions of the girls near the climax was almost shocking, and quite uncharacteristic given their supposed links to the old saints.
Although The Blessed is quite original, the line between fantasy and credibility is too blurred for me to get a full grasp on author’s intentions. To put it simply, I didn’t get it. This was definitely an interesting change from the usual young adult stories I enjoy, but quite clearly not a novel for me. I imagine others will be more intrigued by the elusive nature of the plot, and perhaps even compelled enough by mystery surrounding the characters to notice any flaws.

Aw, sorry this wasn't really for you, Sam. It certainly does sound strange! I can't connect to a story if the main characters aren't likeable or memorable. Despite the cover being gorgeous, I don't think this would be for me either.
ReplyDeleteThanks for an wonderful and honest review. :) xxx
I guess this book is not meant for everyone. I've only read the first few pages and I felt timid to move forward with the book. I agree, the tone is dark, eerily lamenting and hauntingly strange. Thanks for sharing your sincere thoughts with us :)
ReplyDeleteEven though I'm not familiar with this book, it doesn't look like a book for me either. :( Sorry you didn't enjoy it much, Sam, but I can certainly understand why you weren't a huge fan of it. Stunning review as always. :)
ReplyDeleteI will say that I love the tattoo the girl is sporting on the cover, however. So dark and lovely. :)
That opening paragraph hit the spot, but too bad this one turned out flat after all :( Awww...I was all excited at "deeply thought-provoking concepts" XD Having mediocre characters always diminishes the effect of a book because after all, they are the medium for the concepts in black ink on the page. Interesting that the violence reached that extent O_O Gosh, I'm feeling the strangeness just from your review >_< Sorry this wasn't your cup of tea, but thanks for sharing the honest review, Sam! <3
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn't like it much hun >: That cover is very enigmatic though ;) But the book sounds....different, I don't know what I would think of it if I read it. You're right though, it does sound confusing and I haven't even read it ;) Thanks for the great review Sam!

Aww, I'm sorry you weren't able to connect with the characters or enjoy this novel very much, Sam! You bring up some really valid points though, so I think I'll skip this one. I've been hesitant about adding it to my TBR-Shelf, simply because the US Cover is quite creepy, and I can see that I was right. (On the other hand, the UK Cover is gorgeous! Why do UK and Australia always get the better covers?) Anyway, thank you for the helpful review Sam! It was absolutely wonderful, as usual! :)
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing a lot of mixed reviews for this one, too. A lot of people were talking about the weirdness of this, but I suppose I'll have to check it out to see for myself. :P Too bad the characters weren't as good as they could be, though. That always annoys me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the helpful review, Sam!
Wow. This book does sound different and confusing. I never heard of this book before. I enjoyed learning about the strangeness of this story and hearing your points on why its not for you. from what you said, its not for me either. After all, i like books too that have likable characters. Fantastic review Sam!
ReplyDeleteI saw this book on GR some time back and wasn't sure if this was my kind of book. After reading your review, I'm convinced that this isn't a book I should read. Why waste my time on strange books when there are so many awesome ones?
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that the characters are not likeable at all. I would be very frustrated too if I were in your place.
Thanks for the honest review, Sam! :)
That cover is beautiful! Sorry this wasn't the book for you. I'm on the fence with this one. Thank you for the informative and honest review!
ReplyDeleteThe cover is beautiful, but sometimes that's just all there is about a certain book! Weird and Strange, this sounds not like a book I would enjoy. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about the Saints plotline. Thanks, but no Thanks! I do not think this is a book for me :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've heard of this book. Sucks it didn't connect with you, but I'm kind of interested in it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this book prior to reading the review but it sounds very intriguing. I'm interested in knowing more about Sebastian but unreliable narrative gets on my nerves sometimes and I don't think I'd care much for the other characters. I read up more reviews on goodreads and people either seem to love it or not get it at all. Also I was spoiled on the violence that occurs...wow. I'm not sure if I want to read this or not.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame this one didn't end up to be a book for you. I've seen this before on some blog and it did catch my attention, the cover looks good and the premise sounds unique and thought I might pick it up someday but now I'm not sure anymore. There were so many mixed reviews and the writing seems like a bit confusing. Thanks for the honest review, Sam. :)
ReplyDeleteThought the premise sounded good, but was on the fence about adding it to my 'to read' list. If parts of it don't make sense it's not really my sort of book...I mean I don't mind some things being left unexplained if a book is fabulous, but with stereotypical characters and an iffy narrative, I'm not convinced. Thanks for sharing, Sam.
ReplyDeleteToo bad that you didn't like it. I haven't heard about this one before. Since I am not really religious and based on your review, I don't think I'll be adding this to my tbr shelf. Thanks for sharing though, Sam :D
ReplyDeleteDarn! The first passage totally had me. I mean, strange, bizarre and thought-provoking? Where do I sign up? But then the bad news came and my face fell completely, I went from smiling excitedly to frowning at my screen, hah. Underdeveloped, stereotypical characters are a major deal-breaker for me. The rest I could live with.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I just hate it when you don't get a book. I was interested in this book but I'm a little unsure now, mainly because I hate feeling distanced from characters & their actions, I like to be there with them. Thanks for a well explained, honest review, Sam! :)
ReplyDeleteThis book does sound really interesting and check the cover out! For that alone I probably would have picked it up! The Blessed sounds like it has a lot of potential, but it falls flat on a lot of aspects. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you Sam, feeling distant from the characters would have made this book a difficult read for me too! But thanks for the lovely review and for taking one for the team! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame that this didn't work out for you. I'm not really in love with the cover and blurb sounds okay to me, but after reading your review.. I don't like it when I still question the plot; I want everything to be certain. The characters also sound a bit too.. uninteresting, I guess. Thanks for sharing and I'm going to skip this book :)
ReplyDeleteIt's such a shame you didn't enjoy this, I really liked the sound of it! Argh, it's so annoying when the main characters aren't relatable, making sure they are should be #1 on an authors checklist.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm a huge wuss, violence is not my favourite thing to read about. So if somebody who isn't afraid of violence finds it uncomfortable, then I'm sure I would hate it [or that aspect of it].
Thanks for the review, Sam.(: <3
I actually saw this in the supermarket this morning and contemplated buying it. I didn't, as I hadn't read any reviews of it and I'm glad I passed on it. I thought the premise sounded good, but it's a shame you didn't enjoy this book. Characters are VERY important to me, so I think I'd feel similar to you. Thanks for the honest review, Sam!

Awwwwwww....I'm sorry this wasn't your cup of tea! The ratings/reviews on GR are actually quite similar (or at least for my GR friends). I really dislike reading books with characters that are not likeable/memorable...I always end up not liking it at all even if the plot/other aspects are intriguing. Awesomeeee review Sam!
ReplyDeletesad you disliked this book. i\m freaking exited for this weird strange looking book . i\m like rather weird books. gr8 review sam
ReplyDeleteHmmmm. This sounds like a very difficult read given all the uncertainty and the trying to discern what exactly is actually happening. I usually like when things are a bit blurry and I'm trying to figure out how everything is going to fit together in the end (like the Unbecoming of Mara Dyer - that was a good kind of strange for me), but this sounds like it's more of a frustrating type of confusion. Not sure how I feel about giving this one a try, I think I'm going to wait. Thanks for your thoughts Sam!
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I love this cover far better than the US cover though, it's gorgeous:)
Aw, sorry you didn't enjoy it! :( It sounds a very complex and heavy, I don't think I'd really enjoy it. Characters are the main part of the story, and if they don't feel relatable (or likable, even!) then it ruins it.
ReplyDeleteI love the cover, so it's a shame you disliked the book. I haven't read many modern fairy tales, and they have all been bad! :/
Thanks for the amazing and honest review, Sam! :) <3
huh.. this DOES sound like a very confusing book!! Definitley something i wont enjoy, even though i REALLY love the cover! Great review Sam!
ReplyDelete- Farah @MajiBookshelf
The cover is really nice but it sucks that you didn't really enjoy this book. I always have a bit of a hard time really getting into a character if it's in third person so I can imagine I probably won't like this book much. Great review!
ReplyDeleteThe premise of this book sounds really interesting, especially since I remember studying these three saints back in high school. I'm kind of sad that it didn't work out as well for you; but I may still give this book a try.
ReplyDeleteI didn't recognize this book until I saw the cover on Goodreads. The U.K cover is so much better, while the U.S cover is a complete turn off. I appreciate your honesty. If the violence made you squirm in a YA title it must have been something that was over the top. I wasn't interested in this before and your review seals the deal!
ReplyDeleteToo bad you didn't like it more, but it does sound intriguing. I went to Catholic university and actually know these saints' stories pretty well, so I'm curious how they fit into a YA plot. I'll definitely take a look at this. Thanks for featuring it.

Well, I'm definitely intrigued by the unique-sounding plot but as I'm not familiar with the original stories of the saints, I don't see that being something I could connect with at all. It's really a shame about the characters and confusing plot lines... I don't think this will be a book for me, ESPECIALLY if there was over-the-top violence. Still, thanks for the honest review :)
ReplyDeleteSonia
Hmm, I'll probably be giving this one a try just because I have an ARC of it, but if it starts to bore me, I probably won't continue with it then. After reading Dark Companion, I'm not in the mood to read another book with a mysterious sounding plot and cardboard characters.
ReplyDeleteSounds incredibly odd and not my type of story. Sorry this didn't work out for you, Sam. I appreciate the insightful and informative review. :)
ReplyDeleteI was sent this one and can't decide if I want to read or not. I am not sure if I want to still. SOunds like there is good and bad.
ReplyDeleteThanks for honest review,
Brandi from Blkosiner’s Book Blog
I have to admit, you had me intrigued when you first started talking about the uncertainty of whether Sebastian and the girls are legit or just insane. On one hand, these type of stories drive me insane.... yet I love that they do. Does that makes sense? haha. I like a thought-provoking read.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I absolutely understand your issues with the girls, disappointing to hear they're nothing special. No "wow" to them. I am really on the fence with this, it will either be a book I love in a pull-my-hair kind of way, or one where I feel similarly to you. Clearly I'm going to have to read it to find out! Brilliant review, Sam!
It's such a shame when a book shows promise but it's not a story you can connect with. It sounds like an interesting idea but not being able to feel for the girls would have let me down as well. Niely review, Sam!
ReplyDeleteThe premise sounds intriguing, but it's a shame that you didn't find any of the characters.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this book before! I'm not sure will I read it, but your review is great! (as always!) :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing it! :)
oh wow, yea I don't think I will be reading this novel. Generic dull characters, an uncertain plot, and a maybe mental patient who might be making all of this up?
ReplyDeletegreat review sam!

Oh no, I have this one too and from your review, I don't think I'll like it either :(
ReplyDeleteGreat review, Sam :D I don't know exactly what to think about this book. It seems so bizarre o.O
